Bobokan Foundation (foundation for youth in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso) Establishment of the Bobokan foundation ![]() The meaning of the word Bobokan is ‘people from Bobo-Dioulasso’. The Bobokan foundation aims to help children and youngster in poor quarters of Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) on their way to a better future. The Bobokan Foudation (formerly called A.G.M.B.) was established in 1994, by a Group of Young people from ‘Le Vieux Quartier’, the oldest district of Bobo-Dioulasso, where the foundation still has its home base. In their communication and trade, the members of the foundation focus on music, tourism, art, culture and handicraft. Volunteers form the basis of the Bobokan Foundation. These volunteers strive to enable children and youngsters in their district to reach a better future. ![]() Aims: 1.Building an educational, social and cultural centre where the youth can live, learn and prepare for future work. ![]() 2.Improving the level of knowledge of children who fall behind at school. 3. Fighting youth unemployment and youth crime. 4. Raising the level of cultural knowledge among youngsters. 5. Enabling youngsters to be educated in and to get work experience in various forms of handicrafts. 6.Stimulating exchanges between various cultures. 7. Improving sanitary, hygienic and general living conditions for inhabitants of Le Vieux Quartier and Quartier 24 in Bobo-Dioulasso. The foundation has been set up to realise these goals. ![]() In 1994 the young people of the foundation set up a traditional music group, called Dioulasso Ba Percussion, to perform at weddings, births and other cultural manifestations. They make use of traditional African instruments, like the djembe, doun-doun and ballophone. This music group aims to get young people in the world acquainted with the traditional music of Bobo-Dioulasso. By means of a strong combination of instruments, inspiring vocals and rhythmic dance, they manage to create a lively atmosphere. With their songs they aim to make the present political, social and cultural problems in Burkina Faso subjects of discussion. In 2001 the Foundation started building a Centre in Quartier 24. Since then the Foundation has really taken shape, and a better future for the youth in Bobo-Dioulasso, especially Quartier 24, can be obtained. Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta, a French colony) is a country in West Africa, with e.g. Mali, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Niger as its neighbours.
